When in 1795 the "Salon of 1765" was published and a few years later the "Great Salon of 1767" appeared in print, the admiration and the interest in these reviews was great, whereas the exhibitions, the artists, even the style they where describing, meanwhile was so remote that it was perceived as historical past. Diderot's rich and fiery mind triumphed in forcing posterity to take interest in an art criticism whose subject matter had become irrelevant long ago.
