Atelier Besetzung Camp
Camp Städtische Galerie, Tuttlingen 2017
During a squatting of the southwing of the former Bethanien in Berlin Kreuzberg in 2007 we drew up a plan for the relocation of Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien. While migrating from the former hospital into a nearby abandoned amusementpark, the rooms of the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien will not be left behind, but extracted to be reconstructed as an urban artist colony between the ruins of the fairy wheel, fun express and roller coaster.
Our move is to leave behind possessions and begin anew on waste land.
For Tuttlingen we have casted the 28 rooms of Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien in a smaller scale in recycling concrete.
The Camp of the Renegades is a settlement for aging artists in Berlin. About 10.000 artists are based in Berlin. Most of them live precariously and do not profit from the glamour of Berlin's image as the city of art. Let's presume they stay on and grow old, what will become of them in 30, 40 years? It is about time to think about an artist settlement and take the matter into our own hands.
From a perspective of critical proximity we question the relationship between art and power. Starting point is the case of the former NS-state studio Arno Breker in Berlin, where we ourselves have worked from 2001-2009. The recent rewriting of its history motivated us to go back to its Nazi roots and track them to present times.
