settlement project for Kleiner Grasbrook Hamburg
wall painting, architectural placeholders, Kunstpalais Erlangen, 2010
During a residency in the so called problem district Veddel we developed a proposal for the underprivileged inhabitants from 85 countries of origin and the adjacent disused harbor area. According to the model of the "land run" which served as a method for development in the late 19th century in North America, we demanded to give away the land for free and let everybody who wins the race and stakes a claim build on it according to their needs – a self-regulating process in which different cultural backgrounds can come into effect.
"What about the land?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"Land. They’re giving away land for free."
"That’s true. The west’s opening up."
"Can’t be good land."
"It’s the finest in the world. Seeds flourish in it."
"The cattle that grow upon it is as fat as elephants."
"How do you get it?"
"You’ll have to run for it in a race."
