Artistic Practice
Dellbrügge de Moll have been developing a context-based artistic practice since the early 1990s that investigates the interactions between public space, the built environment, and forms of social coexistence. Historical research, critical analysis, site-specific installations, and collaborative approaches form the cornerstones of their engaged aesthetic. Their move to Berlin in 1988 marked the beginning of their active involvement in the art scene. This engagement ranged from publishing an art magazine and curating the project space of the German Artists’ Association to artistic research on artist migration, the development of settlement models for an aging artist community, and investigations into the former state studio of the Nazi sculptor Arno Breker. These research projects resulted in exhibitions, multi-channel video works, public interventions, and publications. They also held a guest professorship at the University of the Arts Berlin, where they taught on body and space.

They document the paradigm shift in the understanding of public space through situations and communicative experimental setups precisely tailored to specific locations (e.g. Reconstructing Future, Munich; Der gute Ruf der Architekten, Berlin; Plano Piloto, São Paulo). In these contexts, actors and other participants are often involved.

The social relevance of their work is also reflected in their choice of materials. In response to the overexploitation of natural resources, they employ recycled concrete, demolition rubble, and incineration slag in certain contexts, and explore contaminated harbor silt as an artistic material.

Among their recent architecture-related works are DIE ARCHITEKTEN at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin and the planned project KANZLERBUNGALOW for the extension of the German Federal Chancellery in Berlin, scheduled for realization in 2027/28. These projects demonstrate their ongoing interest in examining and critically reflecting on the relationships between architecture, society, and urban identity.

With their current project Bilderspeicher, Dellbrügge de Moll open a new chapter in their practice, linking their earlier institution-reflective work in museums with contemporary urban and media image worlds, creating a multilayered dialogue between different visual contexts.

Dellbrügge de Moll arbeiten seit den frühen 1990er Jahren an einer kontextbezogenen Kunst, die die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Öffentlichkeit, gebauter Umwelt und dem Zusammenleben untersucht. Historische Recherche, kritische Analyse, ortsspezifische Installationen und kooperative Ansätze bilden die Eckpfeiler ihrer engagierten Ästhetik. Ihr Umzug nach Berlin im Jahr 1988 markierte den Beginn ihres Engagements in der Kunstszene. Dieses reichte von der Herausgabe einer Kunstzeitschrift über die kuratorische Leitung des Projektraums des Deutschen Künstlerbundes bis hin zu künstlerischen Forschungsarbeiten zur Künstlermigration, zur Entwicklung von Siedlungsentwürfen für die alternde Künstlercommunity und zur Auseinandersetzung mit dem Staatsatelier des Nazibildhauers Arno Breker. Diese Forschungsprojekte mündeten in Ausstellungen, Mehrkanal-Videoarbeiten, öffentlichen Interventionen und Publikationen. Darüber hinaus übernahmen sie eine Gastprofessur an der Universität der Künste, wo sie zu Körper und Raum lehrten.

Den Paradigmenwechsel im Umgang mit dem öffentlichen Raum dokumentieren sie durch Situationen und kommunikative Versuchsanordnungen, die präzise auf spezifische Orte zugeschnitten sind (z.B. „Reconstructing Future“, München; „Der gute Ruf der Architekten“, Berlin; „Plano Piloto“, São Paulo). In diesen Kontexten kommen auch Schauspielerinnen und andere Akteure zum Einsatz.

Die gesellschaftliche Relevanz spiegelt sich auch in der Wahl der Materialien wider. Angesichts der Übernutzung natürlicher Ressourcen verwenden sie in bestimmten Kontexten Recyclingbeton, Abrissschutt und Müllverbrennungsschlacke und erschließen kontaminierten Hafenschlick als künstlerisches Material.

Zu ihren jüngsten architekturbezogenen Arbeiten zählen „DIE ARCHITEKTEN“ im Humboldt Forum Berlin und der geplante „KANZLERBUNGALOW“ für den Erweiterungsbau des Bundeskanzleramts in Berlin, der 2028 realisiert wird. Diese Projekte verdeutlichen ihr Anliegen, die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Architektur, Gesellschaft und urbaner Identität zu erforschen und kritisch zu reflektieren.

Mit ihrem Projekt „Bilderspeicher“ schlagen Dellbrügge de Moll aktuell ein neues Kapitel auf, das an ihre frühen, institutionsreflektierenden Arbeiten im Museum anknüpft und diese mit urbanen und medialen Bildwelten zu einem vielschichtigen Dialog verbindet.
